The man who accused a woman from his Florida insurance office and killed her is scheduled for execution in Florida under a death warrant signed by Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis.
Kayle Bates is due to die on August 19th in the 10th run of this year. DeSantis signed a warrant Friday for fatally shooting him outside a Florida bar as part of a 1993 attempt to kill him, just three days after the state executed Michael Bell.
Bell is the 26th person in the United States to date to date with a court-ordered execution so far this year, surpassing the 25 executions held last year. This is the highest total since 2015, when 28 people died.
Bates, now 67, was convicted of first-degree murder, lure, armed robbery and attempted sexual assault in the murder of Janet White on June 14, 1982.
Bates acquiring White from the state farm insurance office where she worked, took her to several forests behind the building, attempting to rape her, stab her to death, tearing a diamond ring from one of her fingers.
Bates’ attorney James Driscoll Jr. said in a call Saturday that he would appeal further in the case.
“I believe his execution violates the US Constitution,” he said.
