Walt Disney World is rolling out a new pirate-themed hot spot at Magic Kingdom. The Beak and Barrel, located in Adventureland, is designed as an immersive experience that serves drinks, small plates and a big serving of swashbuckling atmosphere.
Beak and Barrel, the next-door neighbor of the Pirates of the Caribbean ride, officially debuts Aug. 29. Disney previewed the space for members of the media Friday.
Sea sights
The interior decor is all pirate, all over the place. Look any direction to spy multiple ships in bottles, an array of flags, a crackling faux fireplace, melting candles, skulls, squid carvings, big bells, fanciful signs (“no fowl language” and a flier for Walk the Plans Swim School), dozens of portraits of ships and people, including Captain Merry Goldwyn, who, in Disney lore, runs the place.
The tavern looks like an extension of the Pirates of the Caribbean attraction queue, which resembles a fortress. The Beak ceiling is vaulted, and the floor is stone. It’s fairly dark in the two main rooms, which have a couple of subset nooks, including the map makers’ room. There are lots of two-top seating, but also big tables and heavy-duty booths.

Immerse yourself, matey
Pirates are a pretty grown-up occupation, but we’re at Magic Kingdom, typically considered a haven for kids.
“The great thing about this space is it’s for families,” said Chris Weck, senior creative director. “So it’s not just a bar for adults. It’s a pirate experience. We want to immerse our guests in the world of pirates.”
As if the decorations weren’t enough, there are special effects.
Disney sets opening date for ‘Zootopia’ attraction, updates coaster plans
“We have our barker bird that comes out and is pretty much the host of the bar in all the activities throughout,” said Ken Ricci, executive creative development.
“We have our ship’s bell, the sleeping cat. … We have an enchanted rum bottle on the bar. In our Mapmakers’ Room, we have a special-effect compass and some black light effects,” he said. “In our Captain’s Quarters, we have some ships in a bottle that battle. And in our main room, we have a tentacle that moves around.”

Eats
On the Beak and Barrel menu: corn griddle cakes, octopus tentacles and Island Provisions, which includes plantain chips, blue corn tortillas and toasted flatbread with dips.
“Our story takes place somewhere close to where we are in the Caribbean islands, you know, international waters,” said Bobby Rivera, chef de cuisine for concept development. “International flavors are in our food menu, a lot of influences from South America, the Caribbean.”
And the octopus?
“Octopus plays really well into our theme,” Rivera said. “Don’t let that distract you. It’s actually very refreshing, very savory.”
It might be a palate-expanding experience.
“We had young pirates that tested throughout the concept and development process, and I think we’ve created this space where they can be really immersed,” said Stephanie Dold, beverage director. “It gives them an opportunity to try new things. … They’re feeling like, ‘OK, this is what pirates would eat.’”

Drinks
The cocktail menu continues the sea-going theme with items like Siren’s Whisper, Port of Call, Lit Fuse, Barrels Ablaze and the Salty Seas Marrrgarita.
Also available: Punderer’s Punch. There’s rum involved, naturally, and it comes in a souvenir pirate skull mug that’s not available elsewhere.
There are non-alcoholic options at Beak and Barrel.
“I think we’ve really leaned into it in this space,” Dold said. “Pirates were really big into the spice trade, and so we wanted to make sure that that came to life. And some of the beverages we created for kids, they’re a little mysterious in flavor, and we love that because it’s playful.”

Getting in
This could be a perfect storm of demand: Pirates and alcohol, plus the new-at-WDW factor. Beak and Barrel has about 150 seats, but it’s smack in the middle of Magic Kingdom, the most visited theme park in the world. People want to see it, just like the new adults-only GEO-82 lounge at Epcot or Oga’s Cantina, the bar inside Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Disney’s Hollywood Studios theme park.
So, advance reservations are highly recommended.
To keep the churn going at B&B, parties are limited to 45-minute stays.
“You’re not coming in here to sit at a bar and spend the day at the bar,” Weck said. “You’re coming in here for an experience.”
