Gov. Ron DeSantis has not chosen President Donald Trump to become the next governor of Florida.
However, he does not seem to mind seeing his wife in the post.
Last week, Trump supported Rep. Byron Donald in the 2026 race if Napoli Republicans decide to run. The move supports the contest 18 months before the vote is cast. (Desantis cannot be run again due to period restrictions.)
But when a Tampa Bay Times reporter asked about his support at a press conference in Tampa, DeSantis said Donald likes to focus on his work in Washington.
“We won in Florida, and we need to achieve these wins there,” DeSantis said. “You have a guy like Byron. He wasn’t part of the victory we left here to the left.”
Desantis’ stance is noteworthy in both his destruction with Republican standard bearer Trump and Donald’s apparent firing. Desantis and Donalds were once nearby, but the two were separated after Donald approved Trump for Desantis in the 2024 presidential election.
Instead, DeSantis spoke about the possibility of his wife, First Lady Casey DeSantis, and ran for governor. Ron Desantis has been rumoured to call donors recently about the possibility that his wife might run. She has long been his closest political best friend and ally, and she is widely preferred in Florida.
“I won by the biggest margin Republicans have won a governor’s race here in Florida, and she’ll do better than me,” DeSantis said in Tampa. “She is a person with a gut indomitable spirit and a commitment to conservative principles. What you know what we have accomplished means she can take to the next level. I know.”
