President Donald Trump wrote to 14 countries on Monday outlining the higher tariffs they face if they do not trade with the US by August 1.
In a letter posted to Truth Social, Trump warned the country that he would face even higher tariffs if he retaliates by raising his import tax.
Let’s take a look at the countries where we received the customs letter.
Myanmar
Customs tariff rate: 40%
Major exports to the US: clothing, leather goods, seafood
Answer: Major General Zaw Min Tun, a spokesman for the military government in Myanmar. The government said it would follow up on negotiations.
Laos
Customs tariff rate: 40%
Major exports to the US: textile upper, wooden furniture, electronic components, shoes with optical fiber
Cambodia
Customs tariff rate: 36%
Major exports to the US: Textiles, clothing, shoes, bicycles
Answer: Cambodia’s chief negotiator, Sanchan Sol, said the country has reduced tariffs to 36% from 49% announced in April, and is ready to hold new negotiations. He appealed to investors, particularly factory owners, and nearly one million clothing workers in the country to avoid panic over the tariff rates announced Monday.
Thailand
Customs tariff rate: 36%
Major exports to the US: computer parts, rubber products, gemstones
Answer: Thai Deputy Prime Minister Pichai Chunhavajra said Thailand will continue to promote tariff negotiations with the US. Thailand on Sunday opened the Thai market for more American agricultural and industrial products and submitted new proposals, including increased energy and aircraft imports.
Bangladesh
Customs tariff rate: 35%
Important exports to the US: Clothing
Answer: Salehuddin Ahmed, financial advisor to Bangladesh, said he hopes Bangladesh will negotiate better outcomes. There are concerns that additional tariffs will reduce Bangladesh’s exports of clothing from countries such as Vietnam and India.
Serbia
Customs tariff rate: 35%
Major exports to the US: Software and IT services. Car tires
Indonesia
Customs tariff rate: 32%
Major exports to the US: palm oil, cocoa butter, semiconductors
Bosnia and Herzegovina
Customs tariff rate: 30%
Major exports to the US: weapons and ammunition
South Africa
Customs tariff rate: 30%
Major exports to the US: Platinum, Diamond, Vehicles, Auto Parts
Answer: South African President Cyril Ramaphosa Bureau said in a statement that although Trump’s tariff rates mischaracterized trade relations with the US, after proposing a trade framework on May 20, “will continue diplomatic efforts to a more balanced and mutually beneficial trade relations with the US.”
Japan
Customs tariff rate: 25%
Major exports to the US: automobiles, auto parts, electronic equipment
Answer: The Japanese Prime Minister called the tariff “very unfortunate” but said he decided to continue negotiations. Isba said Trump’s tariff rates are lower than those he had previously threatened, paving the way for further negotiations.
Kazakhstan
Customs tariff rate: 25%
Major exports to the US: oil, uranium, ferroloi, silver
Malaysia
Customs tariff rate: 25%
Major exports to the US: Electronics and Electrical Products
Response: The Malaysian government said it would pursue consultations with the US. The cabinet meeting is scheduled for Wednesday.
South Korea
Customs tariff rate: 25%
Major exports to the US: Vehicles, mechanical and electronic equipment
Answer: The South Korean Ministry of Trade said early on Tuesday it would accelerate negotiations with the US to achieve the transaction before the 25% tax comes into effect.
Tunisia
Customs tariff rate: 25%
Important exports to the US: animal and vegetable fat, clothing, fruits, nuts
