Federal prosecutors said Lina Maria Orovio Hernandez had lived under a stolen identity for more than 20 years.
A Columbian woman who illegally lives in Massachusetts was charged on May 22 after allegedly voting in the 2024 election and using her stolen identity to receive more than $400,000 in federal benefits.
Federal prosecutors said 59-year-old Lina Maria Orovio Hernandez had lived under a stolen identity for more than 20 years. She is said to have obtained her 9 state IDs, including her actual Massachusetts ID and her US passport.
She was also accused of improperly receiving federal benefits, including $259,589 in Section 8 rental assistance from October 2011 to January 2025. Social Security Disorders from July 2014 to January 2025 $101,257. Supplementary Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) from April 2005 to January 2025 $43,348.
“The right to vote is one of many privileges to be a US citizen,” the lawyer said. “The government funding program for those in need is intended to be a safety net for those living in our country. We will not support illegal foreigners without our right to be here.”
Federal prosecutors said officers must violate both the front and bedroom doors to arrest her. They suspected that Orobio Hernandez was preparing to escape. She found out that “the shoes were completely dressed next to the open window.”
Orovio-Hernandez was charged with false statements of Social Security Number and made false statements about US passport applications, worsening identity theft, stolen government funds, fraudulent voter registration and fraudulent voting.
“Suspicious crimes are a humiliation for all individuals who play in the rules and undermine many of the programs intended to support the most vulnerable members of our society,” Foley said.
The DOJ said she would be subject to deportation after providing a sentence that could have been imposed.
The Epoch Times reached out to her legal representative for comments, but did not receive a response by the time of publication.
