MIAMI, Fla. (WFLA) – Officials have confirmed that a bottlen-shaped dolphin became chronically ill in the Miami sea earlier this week.
According to NBC affiliate WTVJ, the dolphin named Bimini passed away at the age of 26 after suffering from tracheal stenosis, a chronic condition that increases the risk of acute respiratory problems.
Dolphin Company, which owns Seaquarium, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy earlier this year, following a USDA report stating that several dolphins were injured in conditions at the facility.
In light of reports that found issues in the sea class, including inadequate care of animals and maintaining the overall park, reporters said Miami-Dade County is about to close the Seaquarium lease for unpaid rent.
Animal welfare groups have spoken out in support of eviction. However, last November, an eviction motion was immediately denied by a county judge.
