Choro Dog Belly Flop Contest Lands at Baldwin Park this weekend

Florida is known for its range of off-quilter contests, ranging from Sanford’s couch racing derby to the annual Floridaman game. This weekend’s Berry Flop Contest in Orlando is certainly no exception.

Franco’s Flopfest, hosted by Florida Citrus Sports, landed in Baldwin Park this Sunday, giving 40 people the chance to test the splash and see who will appear as champions. The showdown announced by Cholo Dogs takes place on the streets outside the tactical brewing.

“Competers want to hear their showmanship, splash and, most importantly, their belly pounding the water,” said Franco Furterro, the main man behind the Choro dog. Three judges will decide who will receive the highest award on a scale of 1-10.

The event has grown to include thousands of spectators.

“We went from the car park until we closed the streets. We were looking at 500 to about 2,000 people,” Furtero said. “We have a live band, Oklahoma Stackhouse. We have special beer releases from vendor markets, food trucks and tactical brewing.”

Some of the champions from previous events may appear in this year’s competition.

“The winners in the first year had really good flops, great showmanship, costumes. In the second year, the guy didn’t have any outfit, but he got really red from the flop,” Furtero said. “Last year there was a ‘Handsome Dan’ who dressed up a macho guy. He got very high in the air and slammed it pretty hard. ”

The winner will receive a 2-foot-high Hot Dog Trophy, but the most important award is bragging rights.

“Mainly you take pride in being the world’s belly flop champion,” Hutaro said.
