Charter School Collaboration to Expand Options for Florida Students

A collaboration between Charter Schools USA and Step Up for Student (SUFS) will allow Florida Educational Option Scholars to access individual classes on 62 charter school campuses.

Two major organizations in Florida’s United Education Choice Movement said they will expand access to learning opportunities at charter schools across the state by joining the military.

Florida 500,000 K-12 scholars can use the scholarship to purchase individual classes and other services from charter schools and school districts. Over 100,000 of these students use scholarships that allow children to fully customize their education without attending private schools full time.

As August rolls at the beginning of the school year, three of the state’s 67 school districts and one of the five charter school networks will provide scholars with flexible learning opportunities.

Step Up’s Assistant Director of Provider Development Keith Jacobs said the two groups will work together to help local school districts and public charter schools find creative ways to serve scholarship students.

“Charter schools began more than 30 years ago with a mission to bring the innovations needed in education,” Jacobs said. “Step Up is committed to supporting public schools across the state to explore new opportunities to reach scholarship families. Charter School USA, with its proven ability to serve students across Florida, will recharge these efforts.”

Educational choice was Florida’s standard, with 3.5 million k-12 students attending schools and learning environments of their families. This is evidence of decades of efforts by state leaders to support the unification movement to increase student opportunities.

“By opening campuses across the state for scholarship students, Charter School USA helps set the pace of education innovation,” said Gretchen Schoenhaar, CEO of Step Up for Student. “Working with charter schools on the United Movement will expand access to flexible, quality learning options for Florida families.”
