CBS News CEO Wendy McMahon resigns

“It has become clear that the company and I disagree with the path forward,” McMahon wrote in an internal memo obtained by NTD.

CBS News CEO Wendy McMahon has announced his resignation, describing the past few months as “challenging” on the network.

The Media Outlet confirmed McMahon’s resignation in an emailed statement to NTD, the sister media outlet of the Epoch Times.

McMahon announced her departure in an email message to her team.

“It has become clear that the company and I disagree with the path forward,” McMahon wrote in an internal memo obtained by NTD. “It’s time for me to move on and this organization to advance new leadership.”

McMahon did not reveal any specific details due to her departure.

The Network Executive led the Network News Division and News for four years at CBS-owned Stations. In her X profile, McMahon describes herself as “a champion of journalists and storytellers.”

Harris asked for an explanation of CBS's policy shift

In her statement announcing her resignation, she thanked staff for supporting the “highest standards” of journalism and praised her “truth, fairness, commitment to the highest standards.”

“We defend and support journalism produced by the world’s most amazing stations and stations, celebrate the success of our shows and brands, and elevate our stories and people. …It was a privilege and joy,” she writes.

McMahon’s resignation comes amid a $10 billion lawsuit being launched before President Donald Trump secured his second White House term.

The lawsuit alleges that CBS News compiled an interview with Trump’s Democratic opponent, Kamala Harris, to benefit her in the 2024 presidential election. Trump’s legal team argued that the network was trying to give Harris an advantage to the race, and the media was hoping that “the illegal election and voter interference would mislead them to vote for her through malicious, deceptive and substantial news distortions.”

The network denies fraud.

In October 2024, a CBS spokesperson told NTD that Trump’s repeated claims about “60 minutes” were false. The interview with Harris was not a doctor, CBS said, and “60 minutes” did not hide some of her answers to the questions. “60 Minutes” also released an unedited transcript of the interview, at the request of the Federal Communications Commission.

McMahon’s resignation is allegedly being sought by Paramount Global, which owns CBS, to approve the Trump administration for its merger with SkyDance Media.

This is the second famous resignation after Trump’s lawsuit. “60 Minutes” executive producer Bill Owens left last month and said it was revealed he was not allowed to run the show the way he had always had, and that he would make independent decisions based on what suits the show and the audience.

In a statement to staff, George Cheeks, Paramount’s co-CEO and head of CBS Network, recognized McMahon for his contributions to the company he was in office.

“Under her leadership, our competitiveness and culture at our TV stations have improved dramatically, significantly expanding local news,” Cheeks said in a statement. “Our streaming news platform – nationwide and local platforms are growing stronger, with digital extensions now being introduced to some of our flagship CBS news broadcasts.”

CBS News President Tom Chibrowski and CBS Station President Jennifer Mitchell reported directly to him and said CBS News President and CBS News had moved forward.

McMahon also said in an email to staff that he has “enhanced our business and ensured that the right leaders are in place.” And there’s no doubt they’ll continue to set the standard.”

Meanwhile, Paramount Global is discussing the possibility of resolveing Trump’s lawsuit.
