Canada buys Florida signs to protest Trump’s tariffs

ORLANDO, Fla. (WFLA) – A sign calling out against sudden tariffs on Canadian goods defended by President Donald Trump has appeared across the country, including Florida this week.

According to a report by NBC affiliate WESH, one digital billboard in the Orlando area says, “Tax is gas pump tax.”

“Taxes are taxes on working Americans,” says another sign.

A simple message – bold white text on a black background – has a logo in the corner indicating that it was paid by the Canadian government. Foreign Minister Melanie Jolly told Wesh that our neighbors in the north had paid for advertisements located along the main highways of the Red State.

“Your one-word response was ‘amazing’. You couldn’t believe it, did you? “Aubrey Jewett, a professor of political science at the University of Central Florida, told Wesh, adding that he has never seen anything like that.

“We can’t afford to absorb the higher costs that are given to consumers,” Jewett said. “This is the Canadian way of saying Americans pay for this tariff.”

The Billboard campaign elicited mixed reactions from Orlando locals.

“For me, if it’s from Canada, honestly, I don’t think they should have the right to put anything here,” Camila Dasilva, a central Florida resident, told WESH.

Canadian residents told WESH it was just the government to exercise their freedom of speech.

“I’m totally defending advertising. In the US, they’re promoting tariffs… they’re promoting Trump. So why can’t we do the same here. You can call yourself a democracy… this is free speech.”

Social media reports say that Billboards have also been found in the Tampa Bay Area.
