Bill Essayri, a two-term state legislator, was sworn in as the top prosecutor for the Central District, including LA County.
LOS ANGELES – California Senator Bill Essayli, Republican, was sworn in as U.S. attorney for the Central District of California after being appointed Attorney General Pam Bondy on Wednesday.
The district covers Los Angeles and surrounding counties and is the largest federal judicial district in the country.
According to the Central District Office, the 39-year-old essays were sworn in by US District Judge Dolly M. Gee as interim US lawyer at a private ceremony in Los Angeles. The appointment must be confirmed by the Senate.
The essays inherit the representation of Attorney Joseph McNally, who filled the post when Martin Estrada resigned in January.
Until Tuesday, the essayri was a two-term Republican lawmaker since December 2022, representing the 63rd Congressional District. Riverside County Republicans were pushing for conservative legislation, but part of his bill wasn’t far away, as there were 60 Democrats out of their 80 members.
One of his most recent measures was AB 844, which reverses California law and prevents male athletes who identify transgender people as participating in sports for girls and women. It failed at the Legislative Committee on April 1st. It was the same day that the essay announced the new appointment.
He submitted his resignation letter to Congress President Robert Rivas after announcing his appointment. A special election will be held to fill his seat.
Essayri, the son of a Lebanese immigrant, was a prosecutor before becoming a lawmaker. He was an assistant US lawyer at the same Central District office from 2014 to 2018. Before that, he served as Riverside County’s Associate District Attorney for two years.
The district office currently employs more than 250 lawyers and serves around 20 million residents, and is the largest law firm in the United States outside of Washington, D.C., according to the firm.
In addition to the Central District, California has Northern, Eastern and Southern Districts. All four have been led from January or February 2025 by acting US lawyers after the previous chief was resigned or fired by the new administration. As of April 2, no interim US lawyers for the other three offices have been announced.
According to US law, if there is a vacant seat in the position of a US lawyer, the first US lawyer can become the representative US lawyer and the US Attorney General can appoint an interim US lawyer before the president’s appointee is confirmed.
