
JCPenney will close eight more stores this year after filing for bankruptcy in 2020. The news announced that another retailer, Joann Fabric, will be closing 500 stores nationwide.
JCPenney is the latest big box business to announce the closure of more stores.
After filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in May 2020, the company said 200 stores will be closed nationwide. On Thursday, it was announced that eight more stores will be closing this year.
A JCPenney spokesperson said individual store closures could occur due to “expiration of lease agreements, market changes, or other factors.”

Brevard County has two JCPenney stores. It is located at Melbourne Square Mall and Merritt Square Mall.
Both locations were not on the latest list of eight stores closed.

Why does JCPenney close the store?
After filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, the JCPenney chain was acquired in January 2025 by Simon Property Group and Brookfield Asset Management Inc. JCPenney said it partnered with Forever 21 to create a new company called Catalyst Brands.
Catalyst Brands has over 1,800 store locations with 60,000 employees.

Craft and fabric retailers announced earlier this week that 500 stores across the country will be closing.
In Brevard County, there is only one Joanne location in West Melbourne. As of now, it has not appeared on the closure list.
