Florida Governor Ron DeSantis announced a bill that would require federal candidates to disclose whether they intend to trade stocks if elected. He said the move was aimed at increasing transparency about parliament’s stock activities and restoring public trust. The announcement coincided with DeSantis’ endorsement of a federal bill introduced by Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-Florida). This bill would prohibit individual stock trading by members of Congress while they are in office. Mr. DeSantis urged Florida’s congressional delegation to support Mr. Luna’s proposal, arguing that lawmakers’ investment activities have led to public mistrust. “I’m tired of seeing members of Congress…
Florida has never been a single-sport state. On any given weekend, you might have college football streaming on one screen, the NBA on another, and European soccer on your phone. The combination is not new. What has changed is how naturally betting has blended into that routine. For many fans, betting no longer feels like a separate activity. This feels like another way to follow the game, similar to checking stats or reading post-game reactions. Sports first, everything else second Most Florida sports fans don’t wake up in the morning thinking about the odds. They wake up and think about…

Never underestimate the ability of politicians to come up with creative plans to reach deep into the pockets of taxpayers. Since Puerto Rico was hit by back-to-back hurricanes nearly a decade ago in 2017, U.S. taxpayers have contributed more than $20 billion in federal recovery funds. Now, local politicians are using the legal system as a weapon to steal even more of your hard-earned tax dollars. Under the guise of collecting unpaid construction taxes, local governments are attempting to tax Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) reconstruction projects. A federal contractor who rebuilt the island’s infrastructure on behalf of taxpayers is…
SeaWorld Orlando is caring for a “cold-stunned” sea turtle rescued from Cape Cod, Massachusetts. The goal is to return the animals to the Atlantic Ocean. The 14 Kemp’s tortoises are some of the endangered species. Their camps begin moving south in late November or early December, said senior zoology specialist Mallory McCormack. Cape Cod’s complex geography can pose risks, she says. “If they get stuck in that area and the water around them gets very cold, that affects their movement and they get cold stunned,” she said. “They are stranded on shore, unable to move to swim or move to…

TORONTO – The Florida Panthers failed to find the goals they needed on the first stop of their road trip, losing 4-1 to the Toronto Maple Leafs on Tuesday at Scotiabank Arena. Currently, the Panthers (22-17-3) and Maple Leafs (20-15-7) both have 47 points. “I didn’t like the game tonight,” head coach Paul Maurice said. When the Maple Leafs got a power play early in the first period, Sergei Bobrovsky shut out Auston Matthews on a breakaway and went into the penalty kill clutch. After the Panthers broke their sticks and sent the play the other way, Easton Cowan completed…
The Orlando Automotive Museum will unveil a restored version of the pink guitar-style Cadillac once used by Elvis Presley on January 8, the rock star’s birthday. The Desertland Park attraction will feature a 41-foot-long ride and plans to include an Elvis-related promotion for the next day. The car, a 1970 Cadillac Eldorado modified to add strings and frets, was once driven by Elvis Presley during a concert in Las Vegas. The car was purchased earlier this year by Michael Deser, a South Florida developer, car collector, and owner of Deserland Park. The car was in France, where it spent a…
How early is it for an artistic field trip? Pat Green, an Orlando art curator and organizer, is willing to bet that people will gather as early as 7:30 a.m. for coffee and the occasional field trip, even if it’s “brutally early.” And judging by the turnout at a recent meetup he co-hosted with potter Julie Herbers, he’s right. The group of about 20 people gathered at the City Arts Café for a cup of jokes and some informal conversation before heading to the Maitland Art and History Museum for a guided tour. The concept was inspired by an event…
