By now you probably know that Gov. Ron DeSantis has built a detention center in the middle of the Everglades and seized control of the land to do so. But you may not understand how he was able to do it.Scott Maxwell (Provided)Usually, the governor cannot decide to control land he does not own. Because he is not the king of medieval Europe. However, DeSantis was able to do other things that he normally couldn’t do, as he pulled away the grabs of this land and declared a “emergency” that gave him extra strength.Currently, most emergency situations last only weeks or…
TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) – The weather is causing problems for travelers at Tampa International Airport before Independence Day. More than 200 flights delayed on Wednesday, and the number of delays steadily increased on Thursday. TPA is no exception for airports across the country ahead of what is expected to be a record-breaking travel holiday on July 4th. “Me and my family will be on a trip to Japan,” said traveler Lina Abuokabu. “I’m with my lovely wife Indra. I’m going to Seattle, Washington,” said another traveler Stephen Lang. The delay was communicated on Thursday as more people are affected. “Oh,…
Anne D’Hynenzio from Apsion Press Retail Writer NEW YORK (AP) – Americans have another reason to celebrate this July 4th. Preliminary data from market research companies shows that pool parties cost less than they have in years. In an Associated Press analysis, consumer data provider numerator said the total price for beach towels, drink coolers, bathing suits and other approvals for summer fun averaged $858 in June, with the monthly lowest since 2020 at $858. Findings from the company’s seasonal snapshots show that US consumers so far show that President Donald Trump has not seen any significant impact from the…
The other day I packed onto the beach, hoping to jump on a holiday weekend. Without thinking, I threw a yellowed copy of John Mortimer’s “Baile of the Bailey of the Bailey.” Like we’ve done it over the years — no, we’ve made those decades to liven up the Jeep for a drive to Anna Maria Island.I don’t remember our first visit to the southern island of Tampa Bay in Manatee County. Like many Tampa families at the dawn of the 1970s, we spent two weeks at Indian Rocks Beach every summer. It’s nearby, cheap, the cabin has a pool…
MIAMI, Fla. (WFLA) – Two officers were in the right place at the right time when their young mother fell into labor on the Florida turnpike Tuesday morning. NBC affiliate WTVJ reported that 21-year-old Lorena Acosta was in a car driving from Homestead when the water broke. Her stepfather quickly flagged a Miami-Dade school police officer and asked her first responder for help. However, the first responder did not do it in time for traffic and the baby was on the way. The officers descended onto the ground near the passenger door and helped give birth to Acosta’s baby. A…

Associated Press Business Writer Matt Ott Despite uncertainty about how tariffs will affect the economy, few Americans apply for unemployment benefits last week as US layoffs remain low. The Labor Bureau reported Thursday that unemployment claims for the week ending June 28th fell from 4,000 to 233,000, below 241,000, analysts forecast. An application for unemployment assistance is considered a representation for a layoff. In another report Thursday, the Department of Labor reported that US employers added 147,000 jobs in June. This shows that despite uncertainty over President Donald Trump’s economic policies, the US labor market continues to show remarkable resilience.…

Associated Press, by Ali Swenson NEW YORK (AP) — As Republican tax cuts and spending bills defended by President Donald Trump passed through the US Senate, it appears a controversial bid is on the way to stop the state from regulating artificial intelligence for a decade. But as the bill approached its final vote, a relentless campaign of conservative constellations, including Republican governors, lawmakers, think tanks and social groups, was eroding support. Conservative activist Mike Davis appeared on the right-wing podcaster Steve Bannon show, urging viewers to call the senator to refuse this “ai pardon” for the “trillion dollar technician.”…
