They are your child’s middle school teachers. They are seniors who bag your groceries on Publix. They are bank tellers, nurses and neighbors. They may even be you. They are almost half of all Floridians, and they struggle to achieve their goals, new research finds. They are what United Way calls Alice. Limited assets, limited income and employed. A recent report from the organization shows that most of these 4 million Florida households have stable incomes, and are usually too many to qualify for state benefits such as food and childcare support. But they live to pay their wages.Only three states,…
As Palm Beach County’s population grew, the desire to develop continued. But amid the rise of new residents and construction, county officials have also worked to build a harmonious relationship between the need for new development and the preservation of some of South Florida’s last relatively untouched land.Recently, an overview of the county’s agricultural reserves of approximately 22,000 acres of farmland and limited development in the northwest of the county was provided to county commissioners, detailing current projects, preservation, land history and location today. And as a frequent source of major controversy among residents, developers and farmers, county officials are trying…
Behold, the insurance secrets that surface when you look at publicly available data a different way, by ranking companies by what they charge per $1,000 of insured value: — Collectively, Florida-based property insurers charge significantly higher rates per $1,000 than companies headquartered outside the state charge. — Owners of condominium units in Florida pay twice as much per $1,000 to insure their contents than homeowners pay to cover their entire structures and contents. — And if you are covered by one of the 17 companies that have helped to depopulate state-owned Citizens Property Insurance Corp., you are paying significantly more…
MIAMI (AP) – The longest residents at South Florida Zoo celebrated their 135th birthday and their first Father’s Day on Sunday. Goliath, a 517-pound (234-kg) Galapagos turtle at the zoo Miami, first fathered earlier this month, a zoo official said. “Goliath is my hero and I’m sure he’ll soon be an inspiration for many others!” said Ron McGill, a spokesman for the Zoo Miami. “He is proof that wherever he has will, there is a way, and he will never give up!” One egg from eight clutches laid on January 27 was successfully hatched on June 4, officials said. In…
Space leaks and Earth leaks are being taken care of, clearing the path to the next human space flight from the space coast. Topped with a new crew dragon spacecraft, SpaceX Falcon 9 rockets are about to bring in four private astronauts on an Axiom Space AX-4 mission on a trip to the International Space Station on Thursday morning, between 4:45-5:05 AM launch windows from Kennedy Space Center launch pad 39-A. The crew had already faced a series of delays last week. The planned Monday launch was cancelled due to weather and delayed Tuesday’s attempts, allowing SpaceX to fix the…
Mary Brian applied for just two jobs in her life on the same day after graduating from high school. One was in Tampa City. The other is Bush Garden.”I really wanted Bush Garden,” recalled Brian, 81, the other day. “It was a block from my house and I didn’t have a car.”But city hall first called, and as her dad explained, the fair was fair. She was hired on December 12, 1962. John F. Kennedy is president, with gas at 30 cents per gallon, and the Beatles released their debut single “Love Me Do.” Brian took the bus to her…
“A miracle happens here.”It is the slogan of one megachurch in southwest Miami-Dade County, at the forefront of the burgeoning Christian “supernatural” movement. It is a derivative of evangelical rooted in Pentecostalism, leaning far greater towards revelation and prophecy than the mainstream Christian churches, exerting a powerful outsized political influence. That was recently evident in King Yes Ministries, a non-denominational megachurch whose top spiritual advisor, Pastor Paula Whitekane, has been a long-time visitor to President Donald Trump. The church held a three-day spiritual meeting called the “Supernatural School of Spirit.” There, Whitekane and other visiting pastors preached and directed to crowds of…
Did Dad, who walked his life with Teddy Roosevelt Clark, a rough-riding name, invent selfies?Based on the evidence hidden in this photograph, I argue that it was taken on my fourth birthday in 1952.We lived in a small New York City apartment in a huge complex called Knickerbocker Village. A group of residents created spaces in the serpentine basement at the location. They used it as a dark room for the photo club. I am allowed to visit once or twice and can recall dry images with the smell of chemicals, dull red lights, strings. It felt magical as the…
Ponce Inlet, Fla. (WFLA) – Recent discoveries have led to a mysterious breakthrough for divers who disappeared from the coast of Ponce Inlet in 2006. A year later, the jawbone washed the track and field, according to NBC affiliate WESH. James Fulcher, chief medical inspector at Volusia County, told reporters that a human jawbone was discovered at Newsmyrna Beach in 2007, but at that time the deceased could not be identified due to limited DNA technology. However, the bones were recently sent to a specialized lab for further testing, and were eventually identified. Wesh reported that the mandible belongs to…
Michelle Valdes’ mom thinks she sees immigration agents everywhere: in the lobby of the building where she cares for elderly clients, at the local outlet mall, on downtown corners. The fear is constant.Driving to work, going to the store —just leaving the house feels too risky for her.At work, while she cooks and cleans in her clients’ homes, she listens as stories of immigration detentions, deportations and constantly changing laws and policies play loudly in English from the TV.The 67-year-old undocumented Colombian national who has lived in the United States for more than a third of her life has stopped…
