TALHASSEE, Fla. (WFLA) — State lawmakers have yet to pass the budget, and the July 1 deadline is fast approaching. Leadership in both homes is pushing back negotiations.
Lawmakers are already working overtime and have originally extended the 2025 session until June 6th. But now, Florida homes and Senate leaders don’t have an end date to pass the state’s budget.
House Speaker Daniel Perez (R-Miami) has issued a statement to members of the House that the Senate president is back to his words.
We apologize for the delay in this update, but things have changed dramatically since we were together last Friday. The Senate President informed me this week that he was breaking a publicly announced home commitment from the Senator.
I was disappointed when the Senate President informed me of his decision not to bring the House historic tax proposal to the Senators. As you’re sure you can be grateful, this exploded the budget trading framework we negotiated.
As a result, we will contact you with the alternative date as soon as possible. I’m enthusiastic
Recognise that uncertainty about your schedule will cause problems with you and yours
Family, but we will work with the Senate to lock up the date soon

The situation leading to this meeting is not ideal or even expected,
As members of the Florida family, our responsibilities remain the same. Deliver a

On the other side of the Capitol, President Albritton said he doesn’t think the budget meeting will begin this week.
Chair Hooper and I continue to work with our home partners to finalize the joint assignments.
We had to complete the work on a budget as quickly and responsibly as possible. for
For your planning purposes, we do not expect to start a meeting next week.We will certainly notify you as soon as we decide on the date that the budget meeting will start.
I’m sure you know, Governor DeSantis expressed his concern earlier this week
The tax easing framework was announced last Friday. Specifically, the board’s sales tax proposal would be excessively profitable to tourists and foreigners, and would “dead on arrival.” From speaking to the Senator, I have many of you shared concerns about both the number of frameworks and the policy, and instead support targeted tax relief that benefits older adults who are aging with dignity, including options proposed by the Senate in SB 7034.The main concerns we heard from the senators were:
A total sales tax cut of one quarter of a penny is meaningless, felt, or
It is seen in families and seniors when compared to other available options. A $2.5 billion repeat tax cut is not sustainable when combined with projections
There is already a shortage of budgets on the horizon. Regular tax cuts of $2.5 billion could constrain options for major property tax reform
The governor, the House, the Senate and most importantly, the Florida people we represent –
We ask us to make suggestions.Throughout the entire process of negotiations with the House of Representatives, the Senate
We have committed to tax cuts that provide a wide range of meaningful tax cuts for families, seniors and small businesses. As negotiations move forward, Chairman Hooper and I will continue to seek your advice and feedback. It is important to me to develop a tax credit package that will remain balanced budgets to consider long-term sustainable and meaningful property tax relief for voting in the upcoming general election. We will continue to work towards a final budget and tax relief package that the House, Senate and governor can support.
And as the inner party budget fight continues, what does this mean for the Republican Party in Florida?
8 On your side, I met with Evan Power, the chairman of the Florida GOP, and asked him what he planned to bring all the people involved to the table.
“We’re open to whatever they want to do, and we’re trying to encourage everyone to take this to the landing,” Power said. “We have a historic tax reform package. We’re just trying to get everyone who’s having that conversation and try to get it done so that taxpayers can understand that they’re getting their money back this year.”
But DeSantis said at a press conference in Tampa there is no need to hold a summit for the governor and Republican leaders to travel back and forth.
“But with all the respect, that’s not the role of the Republican Party in Florida. So, yes, no, we’re not going to do a dog and pony show. That’s not how this works.
As of now, the state senator has no plans to be in Tallahassee this week, but on May 12, the House of Representatives will be on the floor to pass a resolution extending negotiations until the end of June.
