Arrested after young father was killed in a fatal basketball fight in Carrollwood

CAROLWOOD, Fla. (WFLA) – An 18-year-old child faces murder charges in connection with a fatal shooting on a basketball court in Carolwood.

Lawmakers said 18-year-old Anthony Cabrera Morales fired a shot during a pick-up basketball game at Plantation Park on Tuesday night, killing 19-year-old Brian Jones and injuring another teenager.

On Thursday, Morales appeared before a judge wearing a green vest.

“Cabrera Morales, the state has filed a motion for pre-trial detention against you for two life felony classified as a dangerous crime,” said Hillsboro County Judge Logan Murphy.

Newly released court documents show that Morales got caught up in a debate in court and fired fire on two victims. According to witnesses in the document, Morales shot the teenager 20 to 30 feet away.

One of the victims had fled when he was shot. Neither of the two victims were armed.

News Channel 8 on your side spoke with Jones’ sister who shared a photo of her brother. His sister said he was a young father and was full of life.

Due to the serious nature of the crime, Morales will remain behind the bar as of Thursday.

“You will not be bound by these charges until we hear from the state motion,” Judge Murphy said.

Morales faces two-degree murder, attempted murder, both of which are felony charges of life. Prosecutors are trying to get him to prison without restraining him.
