TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) – The father of a student killed in a 2018 school shooting in Parkland, Fla., responded to Thursday’s shooting at Florida State University.
“America is broken,” posted on X, Fred Guttenberg, whose 14-year-old daughter Jamie was killed when a gunman fired fire at Margery Stoneman Douglas High School.

“Fortunately, many of her friends who managed to survive that Shonen continued to attend FSU have written,” writes Guttenberg. “Incredibly, some of them were part of their second school shooting, some were in the Student Union today.”
Since Jamie’s murder, Guttenberg has become an outspoken advocate for more powerful gun laws, including bills that require background checks of ammunition as well as guns.

“As a father, all I wanted after the Parkland shooting was to help the kids get safe,” Guttenberg wrote. “Sadly, for many people who refuse to do the right thing about reducing gun violence, I am not surprised that this happened today.”
At the time of the report, one person was killed and another was injured in a shooting at the FSU Student Union. University police say they “neutralized the threat” and the campus is secured.
