Australia’s federal elections were officially set for May 3 after Prime Minister Anthony Albanese visited Governor Samantha Mostin this morning to demand Election Day.
This also begins the election campaign to secure voter support for the Prime Minister and his political rival, opposition leader Peter Dutton, in the face of about five weeks.
Albanese’s decision comes days after his government handed over the 2025 federal budget.
The Labour Government was originally scheduled to hold elections in April, but the date was delayed due to the tropical cyclone Alfred, which wreaked havoc in Queensland and northern New South Wales.
After visiting the Governor, Albanese held a press conference where he laid out the vision of the workers and addressed concerns from the public.
Australians are better under labour: PM
The Prime Minister said Australians are better under the labour government in response to allegations of opposition.
“We were in a tumultuous ocean, but if Peter Dutton had his way and opposition to our cost of living had been introduced, Australians today would average $7,200 (USD 4,500),” he said.
Albanese also criticized Dutton for his budget response, saying it was “everything about fear.”
“He (Dutton) has no plans to bail out the cost of living,” he said.
“All we saw last night was a very dark speech, a negative speech. We (the Union) had no plans other than jacking the taxes for all 14 million Australians.”
During its response on March 27, opposition leaders pledged to abolish the Workers’ Climate Change Initiatives and the Gig Workers Act, as well as several other major policies.
He also pledged to establish a new gas reserve for domestic use, cut fuel excise tax by halving and cut 41,000 civil servants.
Workers’ campaigns are about hope: PM
At the same time, the Prime Minister said his campaign will focus on “hope and optimism.”
“What I want is a campaign about policy material and hope and optimism for our country,” he said.
“The greatest honor of my life is being here in Australia, but that’s also when I stepped into the G20 meeting. I know that Australia has a fair spirit to take care of each other…”
