TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) – A Florida High School senior passed away Friday after being caught in RIP current a few days before graduating.

Sebastian River High School said he was “tragically caught up in a RIP current and pulled under the water for a few minutes” when he went to the beach with a group of upscale mates after school.

“Despite long efforts to revive him, he died in the hospital shortly after the incident,” a school official said in a Facebook post.

The Indian River County Sheriff’s Office told WPBF that the student is 18 years old.

A spokesman for the Indian River County School District told WFLA. The student was a beloved member of the SRHS band and was due to graduate on Thursday.

“Our thoughts and heart lie in our students’ family, friends and everyone who is saddened. We would like to thank you for keeping this family and our school community in your mind,” the school said.

Grief counseling and support services will be available on campus, supporting students and staff in the coming days.
