A pool of 5 million above ground was recalled after death in six states, including Florida

(Nexstar) – A ground pool of around 5 million people has been recalled after being linked to the deaths of nine children between 2007 and 2022.

The US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced a recall on Monday, along with several pool manufacturers. A recall alert issued by the CPSC showed that an external strap enveloping pool support could provide a way for the child to enter the water, even if the dungeon was removed.

“The compression straps surrounding the outside of the pool’s legs create scaffolding, allowing children to access the pool, pose a risk of drowning,” the alert reads.

The CPSC believes that pool straps are associated with the deaths of nine children “between 22 months and 3 years old.” Drunking occurred between 2007 and 2022 in six states: California, Texas, Florida, Michigan, Wisconsin and Missouri. The CPSC said it was aware of three additional cases during that time, but said whether those cases resulted in death.

The CPSC also includes an image of him standing on one of the compression straps, showing how a child can enter the water themselves.

The pools affected by the recall are manufactured in China and sold under the brand names Bestway, Coleman, Intex and Polygroup, a recall alert indicates. All models have sides below 48 inches.

The recalled pools were sold in stores and sold online at over a dozen national stores. Large retailers include Walmart, Target, Amazon, The Home Depot, Costco, BJ, Wayfair and others, and are listed in CPSC alerts.

Consumers with pools are urged to contact Bestway, Intex or Polygroup for a free repair kit. This allows the owner to replace the compression strap with a rope located near the ground.

“Interim consumers must ensure that children do not have access to unauthorized pools or prevent the pool from being drained until repairs are installed,” the alert reads.

More information, including models of the recalled pool and contact information for Bestway, Intex, or Polygroup, can be found in the CPSC alert.
