A new I-275 expansion construction project begins

st. PETERSBURG, Fla. (WFLA) – Pinellas County’s new I-275 expansion project begins Friday.

FDOT will last for the next four and a half years. The completed project will eventually connect the drivers from West Shore to Tropicana Field more smoothly.

Drivers can expect to start seeing construction on this foot of the project between 38th Avenue North and 4th Street North.

“So, this new project will have two paid lanes from 4th Avenue to 38th Avenue, two of which will go north and south.”

According to FDOT, the three non-cooking lanes are still in each direction to improve lane continuity.

Drivers should be looking for how this will affect their commute.

“There’s lane closures, speed limit reductions, and we sometimes detour them, mainly at night,” Williams said.

FDOT says it also addresses noise concerns about its 7.5-mile corridor by installing a noise barrier along much of its stretch.

“They don’t eliminate the noise, but they can reduce it with a lot of decibels to make things a little quieter in their neighborhoods along the interstate,” said John Maxshaffary on FDOT.

Continuous improvement is part of the “Moving Florida” infrastructure initiative.

“It’s a $340 million construction project. There’s a master plan for the entire interstate system throughout the Tampa Bay Area, and this is one of that whole big puzzle,” McShaffery said.

FDOT is holding an open house held next Thursday at the Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority (PSTA) Office from 4:30pm to 6:30pm. Click to register.
