ORLANDO, Fla. (WFLA) – Orange County Sheriff John Mina said a man with schizophrenia was shot dead by a lieutenant on Saturday.

Officers responded to their Orlando home around 3:30pm after receiving a report of a man with schizophrenia acting irregularly on the streets.

Mina said the man was reportedly not taking any medication.

When the officers arrived, they met the man’s father. He said he was in the bedroom with a knife.

Mina said deputies tried to talk to the man for five minutes after he left the bedroom and tried to stab one of the people on the scene “within a second.” He then tried to grab the secondary gun while swinging the knife again, the sheriff said.

At that point, the aide shot the man several times. Lawmakers provided assistance on the scene before the man was taken to the hospital, where he died of injuries, Mina said.

The aide who shot the man suffered a laceration to the head and was taken to the hospital, where he was in better condition.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement will investigate the incident in line with the shooting protocols involving officers. After the investigation, the Orange County Sheriff’s Office will conduct an internal investigation.

The agent was placed on temporary paid administrative leave with pending investigation results.

Mina said there will be body camera footage of the film being released within 30 days.
