This comes as NASA prepares to send astronauts to the moon for the first time in decades. Stephen Altemus, co-founder and president of Intuitive Machines Mission, said the operation would “set the stage for the lunar economy.”
Athena, a six-legged Nova-C lander, lands in the Antarctic region of the moon, where water could be trapped under the surface. The moon lander drills down for gas.
“We have good ink that there is water ice trapped in the Antarctic region of the moon,” Artemas told Wesi. “What we’re going to do here is demonstrate the techniques of how you drill to find it.”
The SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket will carry the Moon Lander into space on Wednesday. The launch window opens immediately after 7pm
