Collier County, Fla. (WFLA) – A Florida woman was arrested Monday after saying she repeatedly refused to look after a 12-year-old dog despite the quote and fine.
The Collier County Sheriff’s Office said the investigation began in November when citizens found Sammy, a 12-year-old white samoyed, escaped in Sabal Ridge Lane, and brought his dog to Collier County’s Home Animal Services.

The dog was bleeding gums and appeared to be in serious dental pain. Officials said staff were unable to determine their gender initially because Sammy’s fur is so matte.
Dog owner Ida Marco has been issued two quotes by Collier County Animal Control Officer to obtain Sammy’s veterinary care and grooming. She also received a quote for a mandatory court appearance.
The lawmaker said Marco refused to let the animal control officer check the dog and admitted that the dog was not in care.

The Sheriff’s Office said Marco had not appeared in court. She was convicted and fined $500.
Detectives later discovered that Sammy had worsened. They said Sammy’s matte fur restricted movement and showed signs of oral and ear infections.
“The detective concluded that the dog had endured a long and unnecessary suffering due to Marco’s intentional negligence,” the sheriff’s office said.
A search warrant was obtained and the detective took Sammy away from Marco’s house. The warrant also granted CCSO temporary dog custody, allowing for treatment and veterinary evaluation.
The vet said Sammy had severe mats, advanced dental infections and chronic arthritis.
“Sammy endured continuous and unnecessary pain, but could have been significantly reduced or avoided with proper care and caution from the owner,” Dr. John Morton said.
Sammy is safe and recovered with domestic animal services. The CCSO petitioned the court for full custody of the dog.
Marco was arrested Monday and charged with aggravated animal cruelty.
“It was a heartbreaking incident,” Sheriff Kevin Lambosk said. “Thanks to coordinated efforts by detectives and local animal welfare agencies, Sammy is safe and repaired, and the suspect will be held accountable for her negligent behavior.”
