The family of the man who died when a Florida surgeon removed the liver instead of the spleen said hospital staff had joined the cover-up to hide the true cause of the death of a loved one.

During what appears to be a splenectomy, Dr. Thomas Shaknowsky was cut into William Brian’s liver and was bleeding at Ascension Sacred Heart Emerald Coast Hospital in Walton County on August 21. I continued to dissect. The surgeon general said.

He then placed a “easily identifiable liver” on an operating room table, saying it was Brian’s spleen, McClatchy News previously reported. Brian was 70 when he passed away.

State surgeon General Joseph A. Radapop has suspended Shaknovsky’s license for “repeated and severe surgical errors that cause serious patient harm” in connection with Brian and other patients, the order said.

Shaknovsky’s license was “retired” on November 14, state records show.

According to the 114-page lawsuit, the hospital and nurses tried to hide the surgeon’s error and fake Brian’s death certificate and other state death records. The lawsuit was filed on January 30th against Genesis Carre USA and four nurses in Florida, Shaknowsky, Ascension, Ascension and four nurses.

Shaknowsky was employed by Genesiska, a spokesman for Brian’s family’s lawyers.

The hospital and nurses “have an obligation to accurately report Mr. Brian’s death,” they “misinformed the cause of the death,” the complaint said.

Ascension told McClatchy News that it had not discussed the aggressive lawsuit and rejected McClatchy News’ request for comment.

“Our thoughts and prayers are influenced by our family and everything,” Genesis Carre said in a statement to McClatchy News, adding that he had not commented on the pending lawsuit.

Shaknowsky did not immediately return a request for comment.

“This heartbreaking loss has devastated William Bryan’s family. We want this pointless tragedy justice,” said lawyer Joe Zalzaul, who represents Brian’s family, in January. He said in a news release on the 30th.

Alabama resident Brian felt pain on the left side of his body and was visiting a rental property in Florida with his wife when he was encouraged to undergo surgery at Ascension in August, McClatchy News was previously reported.

According to the surgery report, he repeatedly refused after being granted ascension on August 18th, as he wanted to see a doctor in Alabama. He finally had surgery a few days later.

Brian’s wife, Beverly Bryan, told the McLatchee News on September 26 that her husband was “a victim of a murder in the operating room.”

Another Shaknovsky patient died in July 2023 after undergoing surgical procedures about a year ago, according to a complaint filed in October by the Alabama Health Checkup Board.

Shaknovsky also holds a medical license in Alabama and was temporarily suspended by the board of directors in an order dated October 23, reported McClatchy News. His Alabama license is inactive as of January 31st. It surrendered spontaneously, records show.

According to an emergency suspension order issued in Florida, during another operation involving a third patient, Shaknovsky accidentally removed a portion of the patient’s pancreas.

He was supposed to remove the adrenal glands of a 58-year-old man, but in May 2023 he removed a portion of his pancreas, the order said.

According to the order, the man was left permanently injured and said, “the continuing practice of Shaknovsky’s osteopathic clinic as a physician immediately poses a serious risk to health, welfare and safety.” It’s there.

The lawsuit relating to Brian’s death seeks more than $50,000 in damages for loss of dating and protection, mental pain and suffering, funeral costs and medical costs, the complaints show.

“Dr. Shaknowsky’s lack of involvement in the accepted standard of care and the allegedly concealed sacred heart emerald coast of ascension causes irreparable harm, and the family is medical. We should not endure such grief because of our negligence,” Zarzaur said. “We are committed to putting these actors accountable for their actions.”
