Canned tuna products sold under the brand names Genova, Van Camp, Heb and Trader Joe have been recalled due to potential botulinum risk. In Florida, the cans were being sold at Costco, Publix, Walmart and independent retailers, according to a release shared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Monday.
Tri-Union seafood voluntarily recalled the choice of canned tuna items “from a wealth of caution” after the supplier informed them of manufacturing defects in the “Easy Pull” pull tab. Over time, the product can be leaking or contaminated with Bottridium Clostridium, a potentially deadly form of food poisoning.
As of February 11th, no illnesses have been reported.
Feeding bacterial spores rarely causes people to get sick, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. However, under certain conditions, “one of the most deadly toxins known” can be created.
