Last week, the governor of Florida said he was considering putting property taxes into question in the 2026 state election.
This includes another constitutional amendment to increase exemptions. “We need to limit even more property tax rates,” the governor said.
Several ideas are being thrown in between the governor, state senators and the state capitol.
The Desantis idea would triple the Homestead exemption. Florida Sen. Blaze Ingoglia is about to introduce a bill that would increase tax exemptions for Florida homeowners to $75,000.
This week, Florida Rep. Ryan Chamberlin introduced a bill that would provide a new $100,000 tax exemption for all actual Florida property.
Chamberlin’s bill limits the increase in property tax revenue to 2% per year with mandated reimbursements or debt repayments as the sole option of using revenue surplus. He says it provides relief and is just another step in a gradual, gradual, gradual, effort in our property tax system. “Local governments must now begin living within their means, anticipating changes in income collection in the near future,” he said.
In 2024, Chamberlin proposed a law to abolish the state’s property tax. He called for research into the best ways to phase out property taxes in Florida.
Chamberlin wants to replace local property taxes with other types of sales tax.
“The other ugly truth about the property tax system is the penalty for losing property if taxes are not paid. This is essentially because the government owns all the property and taxpayers are simply You are telling us that you are a tenant. If you don’t pay the rent (taxes), you lose it and it’s given to someone else. It’s an unfair tax system,” Chamberlin said.
