Three low-cost airlines add flights to Florida after Spirit closes

For frugal travelers, news of Spirit Airlines’ bankruptcy raised concerns about the future of affordable air travel. This week, three airlines announced their intention to fill the void in Florida’s most popular tourist destination.

In Tennessee, Frontier Airlines, which previously sought to merge with Spirit, announced on July 5 it would add flights from Memphis to Orlando from Memphis International Airport (MEM) to Orlando International Airport (MCO). The service will operate three times a week and then twice a week, MEM said in a statement.

Breeze Airways will begin service from Orlando International Airport to Atlantic City, N.J., in July, and Avianca will expand its route from Orlando to Medellin, Colombia, to daily service year-round, with a launch date to be announced, according to reports from the Orlando Business Journal and the Atlantic City, N.J., Tourism Bureau.

Breeze Airways has announced new nonstop service between Orlando and Atlantic City as part of a broader expansion of Atlantic City International Airport. Daily nonstop flights between Orlando and Atlantic City will begin July 3, with one-way introductory fares starting at $89, the company said.

The low-cost carrier also announced additional nonstop routes from Atlantic City to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Fort Myers, Florida. and one planned for West Palm Beach, Florida later this year. Breeze officials said the expansion more than doubles the number of nonstop destinations the airline serves from Atlantic City since January, when it first announced service there.

Atlantic City International Airport officials said the additional routes will help maintain affordable travel options and maintain service to key destinations following the closure of Spirit Airlines, a major low-cost carrier in the Florida market.

“We thank Breeze Airways for their investment in Atlantic City International Airport and the introduction of new routes that will maintain service to major destinations in the region,” said Stephen F. Dougherty, executive director of the South Jersey Transportation Authority, which operates the airport. “The timely launch of this service reflects the strength of the market and will help ensure our passengers continue to have access to convenient and affordable destinations.”

Breeze Airways is also expanding its footprint at Tampa International Airport with the addition of two leisure-focused routes, including a new international destination. Starting Dec. 19, the airline plans to begin nonstop flights between Tampa and Cancun, Mexico, with flights to be operated on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Breeze will also begin nonstop service to St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands starting Dec. 16, with twice-weekly flights scheduled for Wednesdays and Saturdays.

The company said the additional routes are part of its continued expansion across Florida following the closure of Spirit Airlines, which previously served many of the state’s budget travelers.

The airline has received several recent industry recognitions, including being named to the 2026 TIME100 Most Influential Companies list and being recognized as North America’s Best Major Airline by the Airline Passenger Experience Association.
