FERNANDINA BEACH, Fla. (WFLA) — A high school football player is facing criminal charges after police say he hit one of his opponents in the head with his helmet during a Halloween game in Florida.

The Fernandina Beach Police Department announced Tuesday that it has obtained an arrest warrant for Bell High School player Daniel Byers, 18.

Officials said the incident occurred during a game in which Bell High School was playing Fernandina Beach High School. Police said Byers “violently pushed” Fernandina Beach, 15, and removed her helmet. He then hit the 15-year-old boy in the head with his own helmet, officials said.

Umpires and coaching staff rushed to the field to intervene. But officials said the incident sparked a scuffle on both sides of the field.

The situation was eventually brought under control by two Fernandina Beach police officers who were on duty at the game, authorities said.

Police said the Bell High School bus and players were escorted from Amelia Island as a precaution.

The investigation continued Tuesday and no further information was immediately available.
