MIAMI (AP) — President Donald Trump will head to Miami on Wednesday, the anniversary of his second term, to speak about his economic accomplishments to a forum of business leaders and world athletes.
The Republican president’s speech at the American Business Forum will cover a wide range of topics about his economic policies and how the investments he secures abroad will benefit American society, a White House official said. This is a significant effort by President Trump to positively impact the economy at a time when Americans remain worried about their finances and the cost of living, and a major campaign focus in Tuesday’s election was on affordability and the economy.
An Associated Press voter poll of more than 17,000 voters in New Jersey, Virginia, California and New York City suggests Americans are worried about rising prices and fewer job opportunities, despite President Trump’s pledges to curb inflation and spur growth.
Trump plans to touch on deregulation, energy independence and oil prices and affordability in his speech, said a White House official who spoke on condition of anonymity to confirm the content of Trump’s speech in advance.
President Trump spent five days in Asia last week, including stops in Malaysia, Japan and South Korea. He sought to ease trade tensions with China in talks with Chinese leader Xi Jinping. In Tokyo, he promoted several major Japanese-funded energy and technology projects for the United States.
Miami Mayor Francis Suarez said he believed President Trump’s recent trip was “transformative during his presidency” and said Trump’s speech would be a highlight of the forum. Organizers describe the forum as a more accessible version of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, or the Milken Institute World Congress, which brings together the world’s elites to discuss economics.
“This conference not only creates this great group of people, but it also creates a people at a particular moment,” said Suarez, a Republican.
President Trump’s visit also highlights how important the Miami region will be during his second term in office.
President Trump plans to host leaders from some of the world’s richest and developing countries at his golf club in the nearby city of Doral for next year’s Group of 20 summit, despite what critics claim is inappropriate.
President Trump’s sons have taken over the management of the Trump Organization during their father’s tenure in the White House, and the president insists that holding summits at his golf club won’t make his family’s business profitable.
The city is where President Trump wants to locate his future presidential library and is currently facing a legal challenge over whether land in downtown Miami was properly conveyed. Miami is also one of the US host cities for next year’s World Cup, which President Trump has enthusiastically promoted as the kickoff for several major global sporting events hosted by the US. Ensuring the World Cup is a success has become a top priority for the Trump administration.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino, who is close to Trump, is scheduled to speak at a forum in Miami later Wednesday.
