TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Gov. Ron DeSantis is working with former Democratic lawmakers to push for term limits in Congress.

On Tuesday, the governor announced that he will co-chair, with former Maryland Rep. David Tron, US Term Limits, a nonprofit organization dedicated to gathering the support needed to convene a constitutional convention to propose term limits. To do so, we need support from 34 states.
Mr. DeSantis and Mr. Tron published a joint op-ed in the New York Times framing their push for term limits against the backdrop of the federal government shutdown. They argued that too many members of Congress are more focused on getting re-elected than passing legislation and working for the people.

“If our nation’s founders looked at it today, they would not recognize the 119th Congress,” DeSantis and Tron said in a joint statement. “Congress is now less a representative institution and more like an elite country club for career politicians obsessed with staying in power, a far cry from its original purpose.”
Nineteen states across the country, including Florida, have passed resolutions calling for a convention on this issue. Part of America’s term limits advocacy efforts includes calling on candidates to sign a pledge supporting three-term term limits for members of the House of Representatives and two-term term limits for senators. This effectively translates into limits of 6 years and 12 years respectively.
