TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — The Enterprise Lease Company of Florida LLC is planning to pay $1.8 million and provide substantial non-monetary relief to resolve federal age discrimination lawsuits, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Committee announced.
Enterprise Leasing operates nationwide, Enterprise and Alamo car rental services in Florida.
EOCC said Enterprises failed to hire candidates over the age of 40 in the administrative trainee position from at least 2019 to the present.
“Over a third of American adult workers are over 50,” said Kristen Foslid, EEOC Regional Attorney. “Employers cannot overlook eligible applicants simply because of their age.”
Approximately 15% of applications received by the Company for that position came from over 40 applicants, while workers represented less than 3% of all employment.
According to the EOCC, more than 125 witnesses who can testify were asked during the interview process at their age or graduation year, and were told by company employment officials that most candidates had graduated from university, were either prevented from pursuing a position or were exposed to other age-related comments.
“Workers of this protected age group can bring rich knowledge and experience to the workforce and contribute to the success of the organization. This settlement reflects the EEOC’s commitment to ensuring equal access to employment opportunities for all individuals, regardless of age.”
The three-year consent ruling requires companies to implement drastic injunctive relief, in addition to financial relief for a class of older applicants.
