TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Former Brevard County School Board member Jennifer Jenkins is the leading Democratic candidate to face Republican Sen. Ashley Moody ahead of the next election.
“We are facing an affordability crisis. People in Washington feel they have no idea what it’s like, but I do,” Jenkins said.
Jenkins wants to take a different perspective on Capitol Hill.
“I’m an educator and a normal person who married a teacher,” Jenkins said.
Former Board of Education members launched “Educated We Stand” in 2024 to oppose educational orientation from conservative group moms for freedom and the DeSantis administration.
J Edwin Benton, professor of USF political science, explains what she is currently facing.
“It’s a completely different ball game than running in a local election,” Benton said. “There are many media markets in Florida. You have to be able to succeed in all of them. That’s going to be difficult. You have to raise a lot of money too.”
According to federal financial records, Moody had spent more than $2 million at the end of June. Also this week, Moody was backed by the Florida GOP, far surpassing next year’s primary.
Party chair Evan Power reached out to support supporters for a donation to support Moody’s campaign.
“We know that Sunshine State is on the right side of history with the help of Senator Moody.
The Florida Democrats have not yet approved the candidate.
There are more than a dozen people, Democrats and Republicans who have applied to run for the US Senate in Florida.
