Bay County, Fla. (WMBB) – Officials with the Florida Department of Health in Bay County have confirmed another death caused by Vibrio vulnificus, commonly known as a meat-eating bacteria.

The most recent victim was a 78-year-old man who was on a family holiday on St. George Island.
They were fishing on the bay side of the island.

The next day he was in a fever.

He apparently got Vibrio vulnificus through the cut in his leg. As his condition deteriorated, he was eventually recognized by Ascension Sacred Heart Bay.

He underwent five surgeries, including two amputations.

Sadly, he passed away four days ago in the hospital on Sunday, August 4th.

Health Department officials also confirmed that other Bay County victims who died in early July were infected after eating raw oysters, which was attributed to Vibrio vulnificus.

Five people have died from carnivorous bacteria in Florida this year, according to the Florida Department of Health.
