TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) – Florida Supplementary Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) recipients and dozens of other states face more restrictions on what they can buy starting next year.
The USDA is enabling states to manage the program with the SNAP Food Restrictions Waiver.
This exemption limits recipients from purchasing nutritious items such as soda and candies.
US Secretary of Agriculture Brook L. Rollins signed the exemption on Monday “to further President Trump’s efforts to make America healthy again.”

Starting January 1, 2026, Floridians using snaps, also known as food stamps, will not be able to purchase soda, energy drinks, candies and prepared desserts.
“In Florida, we ensure that SNAP supports nutritious options that help families thrive, rather than unhealthy products that lead to long-term health issues,” said Gov. Ron Desantis. “Thank you to President Trump for approving our waiver request.”
SNAP recipients have already banned the purchase of alcohol, tobacco, hot foods, prepared foods and personal care products.
