WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court on Wednesday refused to allow Florida to enforce immigration laws, criminalizing people living in the United States illegally entering the state.
High Court cases will remain withheld laws while legal challenges continue. The court did not explain the decision, and Justice did not point out any objections.
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed the law in February in support of President Donald Trump’s push for cracking down on illegal immigration.
Immigration rights groups filed a lawsuit on behalf of two unnamed Florida-based immigrants, claiming that they live illegally in the United States and that immigration is a federal issue beyond the power of the state.
US District Judge Kathleen Williams banned the enforcement of the new law in April. The Attorney General’s Office subsequently failed to petition the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to override the decision.
The law is similar to Texas law, which is also blocked by federal courts of appeals.
