MIAMI, Fla. (WFLA) – Florida teams and volunteers took a 28-hour drive loaded with supplies to support first responders and humanitarian groups on the ground in Texas.
South Florida volunteers and GEM’s global empowerment mission arrived in Texas, where floods wiped out parts of Kerr County.
At least 110 people died during the flood, and at least 161 are still missing.
According to NBC affiliate WTVJ, GEM founder Michael Caponi focuses on supporting survivors by providing serious disaster relief, providing immediate emergency assistance, and assessing the damages of long-term recovery efforts.
“There are kids clothes hanging from branches on the tree, and you can basically see branches 20, 25, or sometimes 30 feet above,” Caponi said.
Volunteers loaded the trucks with water, food and other essentials from the Doral-based headquarters.
GEM is also offering people “Bstrong” cash cards to support unexpected financial burdens, WTVJ said.
