Midea voluntarily recalls roughly 1.7 million of popular U and U+ smart air conditioners, as the unit’s pool water does not drain quickly enough, leading to mold growth.
The news comes as temperatures are rising in the US and the official summer begins is fast approaching.
The Midea air conditioner fits in the windows and resonates with consumers due to its unique design. This allows consumers to close the unit “” window.
The US Consumer Product Safety Commission says the recall also includes around 45,900 units sold in Canada.
There are at least 152 reports of mold on the air conditioner. This includes 17 reports of consumers experiencing symptoms such as respiratory infections, allergic reactions, coughing, sneezing, and sore throat due to mold exposure.
White air conditioners include Midea, Comfort Aire, Danby, Frigidaire, Insignia, Keystone, LBG Products, and Mr. There are brand names such as Cool, Perfect Aire, and Sea Breeze. They were sold in three sizes of cooling power: 8,000, 10,000, and 12,000 BTU.
The air conditioners were sold from March 2020 to May 2025 at Costco, Menards, Home Depot, Best Buy and other stores for between $280 and $500. It was also sold online through a variety of websites, including Midea, Amazon, Costco and Home Depot websites.
Consumers can contact Midea about repairs or refunds based on the purchase or manufacturing date. Individuals wishing to receive a refund must send the unit back to Midea with a free shipping label or submit a photo showing that the unit has been disconnected from the plugged power cord.
Anyone wishing to have the repaired should contact Midea and have the technician install a new drain plug or send a repair kit that includes a new drain plug and bubble levels depending on the model.
