I teach international students in Florida. This is why Trump is wrong

For the past 20 years, I have taught at Judy Genshaft Honors College at the University of South Florida. As my dream job progressed, I became a hit with Mother Road.

The Honorary Students represent some of the best and brightest on campus. Their SAT scores and GPAs are off the charts. They engage in challenging majors. I often call them the Jesuits of USF.

And yes, if you’re wondering as a high school student, I wouldn’t have met the strict standards that should be accepted into the Honorary Program.

Recently, I have been bastarded by President Donald Trump’s attacks on the thousands of international students living on the country’s university campuses.

Trump’s royal order revoked his ability to register Harvard foreign students, but was temporarily blocked by a federal judge, but beyond all perceptions, peavish, gross and stupid.

In my years at USF, my classes have included young men and women from (and this is going to take a while): India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Vietnam, Thailand, The Philippines, China, Taiwan, Germany, Great Britain, The Netherlands, Russia, Spain, Italy, Brazil, Peru, Nigeria, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Cayman Islands, Mexico, El Salvador, Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, Sri Lanka, Turkey, Jamaica, Kazakhstan, Panama, Venezuela, Gaza.

Ah, this is just a partial list.

The contributions of these international students are profound.

Almost everyone is engaged in STEM majors – biomedical, engineering, physics, chemistry, mathematics, biology. Some are business majors. They are all joys of being around. They are intellectually curious. They are very serious people and they can do interesting too.

If you think these students will appear at the USF gateway and start a class, you can’t be any more wrong.

The process of obtaining a student visa is laborious, prolonged and expensive. A huge number of documents, SAT scores, student transcripts, profit and loss statements, visa application forms, and more are required. Students must also demonstrate how fluent the English language is.

In many cases, interviews are required at US embassies or consulates, and sometimes large and expensive travel expenses. International students will also need to demonstrate financial finances to cover the costs once they arrive on campus.

And they wait. And wait. And wait for approval.

For many students, arriving in the US is the first experience living outside their home country. Adapting to American social norms, language, food and culture is intimidating and a culture shock.

Many students struggle with homesickness, far from their family and friends. It will take a little time to adjust. And they do.

This rich and diverse combination of international students deprives them of their university experience.

Last year, USF had over 7,000 international students representing around 140 countries. Due to the risks that are expected, you’d think most of my faculty colleagues across campus value the presence of these extraordinary young men and women in our classrooms.

I mainly teach history-related courses. And they involve team presentations on many subjects. In many cases, the teams include Indian and Pakistani, or Muslim and Jewish students. And everyone is doing well.

They also teach high-level capstone classes where students are tasked with writing extensive essays that reflect how their lives and news events have influenced their personal worldview.

My US students often point out how the Great Recession and the Covid-19 pandemic have affected them. They mostly also pay attention to school shootings and active shooter drills.

However, international students always recall the trauma of earthquakes, floods and social unrest.

There is one example. A few years ago, a Syrian student wrote about being in Damascus primary school when he heard him scream outside in the courtyard. When students rushed to the window to see what was going on, they saw their gym teacher being executed immediately.

I asked students to write about my country’s disruption, natural disasters and violence.

Still, many of them want to use American education to return to their hometowns and improve things, whether medical students, engineering students, computer science students, nursing students. They want to make their country better. And Donald Trump wants to throw them away.

It was a privilege to be around these students.

Frankly, I also have the motives of mercenaries. This is a dirty little secret. I learn more than they do.
