The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is planning to provide an update on Covid-19 policies this week.
FDA commissioner Dr. Marty McCurry and Dr. Vinai Prasad, who heads the FDA centre regulating vaccines, will discuss “an evidence-based approach to COVID vaccination” on May 20th.
The FDA has directed its parent agency, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), to request comment and did not respond to requests for details.
McCurry said at an event in late May that the FDA will release a new framework for vaccines in the near future.
“We want to be very transparent, and we want to create a framework for vaccine makers that they can use, so they have a predictable FDA that you don’t need to worry about,” Makary told the Food and Drug Law Institute’s Conference, the news outlet reported.
Before joining the FDA, Makary and Prasad criticized the government’s clearance and promotion of Covid-19 vaccine boosters, particularly for young people.
While all individuals over the age of 65 can receive the Novavax vaccine, the FDA said that people aged 12 to 64 can only receive the shot if they have at least one underlying health problem at a high risk of serious consequences from Covid-19.
