“I want to have a great four years, I want to hand it over to someone else. Ideally, a great Republican… to move it forward,” he said.
President Donald Trump has shut down speculation about serving his third term and was nominated in 2028 as Vice President J.D. V. V. D. Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio as the best candidates to replace him.
“There are a lot of people selling 2028 hats, but this is not what I’m trying to do,” Trump replied, referring to people selling “Trump 2028” products. “I want to have a great four years of great years, I want to hand it over to someone else. Ideally, a great Republican, a great Republican to move it forward.”
He acknowledged that there was constitutional restraint in serving the third term. The 22nd amendment to the Constitution states that the president cannot take office more than once.
“That’s something you’re not allowed to do as far as I know. I don’t know if it’s a constitution that they don’t allow you to do that,” Trump said.
However, the Ogles efforts didn’t receive much traction in Congress on Sunday. He made sure he would not pursue it.
When Trump was forced on his successor, he praised Vance and Rubio as powerful GOP successors. According to the president, the two well-known Republicans can advance Trump’s “make America great again” agenda when he serves his last term.
“I don’t want to get involved in it, I think (Vance) is a great, great guy,” Trump said. “Marco is amazing. It’s amazing.”
Trump suggested that Vance would be more successful in the Republican primary than his other competitors due to his recognition of the name from his current role.
“But certainly you’re going to say someone is a VP. If that person is outstanding, I think that person will have the advantage,” Trump said.
When asked if Vance was “at the top of the list” to replace him, Trump said “it works very well,” but also admitted that there are many people within the Republican Party who can serve.
This includes Rubio, who played two well-known roles in the Trump administration. As Secretary of State, Rubio serves Trump as the country’s top diplomat. Trump recently chose Rubio to serve as interim national security adviser after being appointed Mike Waltz’s UN ambassador.
“Marco Rubio, incredible,” Trump posted to The Truth Society. “When I have a problem, I call Marco and he will solve it.”
Trump and Rubio became close allies and marked a major contrast from 2016 when they were opposed to each other for the sake of their presidency.
As for the Democrats, Trump said they are currently in “complete chaos” and that there is no clear leader in the party.
While discussing the potential for future leadership for Democrats, Trump said Sen. Bernie Sanders (D-Vt.) was “sharp” despite his age. Sanders is currently 83 years old.
Trump also dismissed Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-Tex.) as a viable choice for 2028, saying Democrats described her as “the future of the party.”
“I don’t know what (Democrats) are going to do,” Trump said. “And I really believe in the two-party system because it’s good to be challenged,” the president said.
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (DN.Y.), who co-starred with Sanders as part of the “Fighting Oligarchy” tour, is also seen as a strong Democratic candidate for 2028.
