St. John’s, Fla. (WFLA) – Deputies rescued a dog trapped in a parked car Sunday as temperatures skyrocketed at nearly 90 degrees.
They received a call about a dog found in a car parked in the home depot on Durbin Pavilion Drive, according to the St. John’s County Sheriff’s Office.
Witnesses reported that the dog had been left in the car for at least 15 minutes.
Deputies broke the side window of the car and the dog was safely removed from the car.
The temperatures at St. Augustine reached 82 degrees on Sunday. This means that the temperature inside the vehicle can easily reach 100 degrees or higher.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), hot car deaths can occur even when outdoors below 70 degrees Celsius, as temperatures inside parked vehicles rise rapidly.
It is important to note that breaking the window will not cool the vehicle sufficiently and the animal may suffer from heat strokes within 15 minutes.
