Spotsylvania County, Va. — Three people were killed and three others were injured in a shooting in northeastern Virginia Tuesday evening, authorities said.
Around 5:30pm, the 911 call came in relation to the townhouse complex in Spotsylvania County, just outside Fredericksburg, and the shooting about 65 miles southwest of Washington, said Major General Elizabeth Scott, a spokesman for the Spotsylvania Sheriff’s Office.
While the authorities were investigating, they urged people to avoid staying indoors for people near the area and those near the scene, she said.
According to Scott, the shooting could have been committed by multiple people. There was no public information regarding immediate arrests or possible motives.
“There are dozens of officers who actively search for suspects and preserve crime scenes, with dozens of officers,” Scott said.
The three injured people were taken to hospital with gunshot wounds. Their terms and other information about them were not immediately available.
According to Scott, all the victims were found outside.
“We’ll be here all night until we find a suspect,” she said at an evening press conference.
Authorities also requested witnesses to send videos to help with the investigation.
Fredericksburg City Public Schools announced on their website that the school will start two hours late on Wednesday in light of the deep impact the incident has had on members of the school community.
“This delay will allow for the time needed to prepare the building and staff to welcoming students with the care and support they need during this challenging time,” the statement said.
The district did not provide further details.
