ISLAMORADA, Fla. (WFLA) – A 22-pound loggerhead sea turtle is back in the sea after being rescued from Florida keys.

Rennie, a giant sea turtle, was found in agony by underwater photographer Mike Papisch, who called Turtle Hospital to rescue him.

“It turns out he wasn’t using a front flipper because of a predator wound. Speaking of injuries to a predator wound, some of the front flippers were actually missing and bitten in the head.”

Rennie is estimated to be between 60 and 70 years old and was transported to the facility on March 14th for treatment.

This video shows Rennie was released after a two-week stay at Turtle Hospital. There, they were treated with broad-spectrum antibiotics, liquids, painkillers, vitamins, wound care and class 4 laser treatments.

“The key here in Florida is where you can see sub-adult and adult loggerheads,” says Zirkelbach. “They’re here, they’re looking for dates, they’re mating here.”

Rennie’s return to the sea was just in time for mating season.
