Trump signs orders to crack down on ticket price gouging

The FTC is ordered to prevent “unfair, deceptive and anti-competitive conduct in the secondary ticket market.”

President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Monday, aimed at thwarting “exploitative ticket scalping” and price adjustment practices at live entertainment events.

“The live concert and entertainment industry in America is the world’s vy hope,” Trump said on his order. “But it was ruined by immoral intermediaries who sat at the intersection of artists and fans and charged terrible fees while providing minimal value.”
The order directs the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to work with Treasury Secretary Scott Bescent and Attorney General Pam Bondi, ensuring that event tickets are purchased in bulk and resold at an inflated price, ensuring they are fully compliant with the Internal Revenue Code and other applicable laws, according to the White House fact sheet.

It also instructs the FTC to “ensure price transparency at all stages of the ticket purchasing process” and to “take enforcement measures” if deemed appropriate to prevent “unfair, deceptive or anti-competitive conduct in the secondary ticket market.”

The order particularly emphasized the enforcement of the Better Online Ticket Sales (BOTS) Act, which allows FTC authority to take action against mesters using bots to purchase tickets.
Kidlock, a singer-songwriter who Trump has long described as a “good friend,” was also present during his signature in an oval office.

Kid Rock, Robert James Richie, called it a “great first step” in working on ticket scalping, thanking Trump for making it “lightning.”

He also expressed his hope for the passage of laws that would reduce the price of resale tickets.

“Everyone who has bought a concert ticket in the last 10 years knows that in 20 years, whatever your politics is, it’s a challenge,” the musician said at the event.

“I’m going to buy a ticket for $100. It’s $170 by the time I check out. I don’t know what was charged, but even more importantly, these bots you know will come and get all the good tickets for the favorite shows you want to go to, and sometimes they’ll be relisted quickly with 400% or 500% markup,” he added.

Trump said ticket females use bots and other means to buy large quantities of tickets and use bots and other means to resell them in the “huge markup” of the secondary market. According to the order, some fans paid up to 70 times the face value to get tickets to see their favorite artists.

America’s live concert and entertainment industry has created a national economic impact of $132.6 billion and supports 913,000 jobs.

Ticket Giant Live Nation said it will support orders and “meaning resale reforms” including implementing bot laws and implementing resale prices caps.

“Scalpers and bots are preventing fans from getting tickets at the prices set by artists. We’re grateful that President Trump took it head on,” Live Nation said in a statement.
In May 2024, the Department of Justice, along with 30 state and district attorney generals, filed a civil antitrust lawsuit against LiveNation and its subsidiary Ticketmaster, accusing them of condemning monopolies that curtail competition in the live entertainment industry.
