TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) – The new bill aims to crack down on Florida drivers who need extreme speeds.
The SB-1782 law imposes penalties on drivers exceeding speed limit of 50 mph or more.
Tampa Bay Area lawmakers introduce federal bills declaring a red tide that declares “major disasters”
The first offence will result in a $2,500 fine, a six-month licence suspension and a 30-day vehicle reservoir. The second offence will result in a $5,000 fine, with a 30-day exemption and a driver to suspend the license for a year.
Orange County Sheriff John Mena told NBC affiliate WESH that he saw a massive increase with Extreme Speeders. His agent cited 101 drivers to go over 100 miles in January, compared to just 29 people at the same time last year.
“They feel they can go as fast as they want, and that’s not Autoburn,” Mena told Wesi. “If we can pass this law, I think it could block some people. No one wants to lose their license for a year.”
If passed by Governor Ron Desantis and signed into law, the law will take effect on July 1st.
