Witnesses told Jacksonville Sheriff’s office that the goalkeeper left the game after a hit, saying he was feeling unwell. He was taken to hospital, where he later died.
His family reported that he had no pre-existing medical conditions.
Jerry Stevens, Ratt, ATC. Duval County Public Schools Supervisory District Sports Medicine said the power from the hit would likely disrupt the rhythm of a man’s heart. He said the man may have been suffering from Commotio Cordis, a rare condition caused by a blow to the chest.
Alex Reed, communications director for the Jacksonville Icemen Hockey Team and Community First Igloo, called the incident “trauma and unexpected.”
