Albanese will call federal elections on May 3 as early poll date

May 3rd and 10th emerge as the most likely election days.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is poised to call the expected federal election, with May 3rd being the early voting day possible.

Federal law requires a minimum of 33 days of campaign period set as the most recent possible date on May 17th.

Speculation about the official announcement escalated after Albanese suggested in a radio interview with Triple M that it was “very imminent.”

However, he stopped checking the exact date. “I’ll call it right away. Australians want to continue doing it. Certainly my caucus colleagues do,” Albanese said on March 27th.

The government burns election topic

In addition to the pre-election frenzy, the Prime Minister and Cabinet Ministry mistakenly posted social media updates on X (formerly Twitter) and quickly deleted them.

This only happens when Congress is dissolved and elections are formally called, amplifying the sense that an announcement is imminent.

Opposition Budget Reply

The timing of the election call coincides with opposition leader Peter Dutton’s response to the federal budget, announced earlier this week by treasurer Jim Chalmers.

Some observers speculated that Albanese’s expected election call was intended to overshadow Dutton’s budget reply, where he proposed a temporary cut in the fuel excise tax.

The coalition claims the measure will save Australians $14 a week on gas pumps, in contrast to the 2027 planned $10 a week tax cut for workers.

Dutton’s proposal reflects the Union’s focus on cost-of-living relief, with sales tax now in place for a year.

Cyclone Alfred delays early election plans

The first report suggested an April election, but Albanese’s plan was destroyed by the tropical cyclone Alfred, causing major damage in Queensland and northern New South Wales.

At a press conference last week, he confirmed that he had postponed the announcement of the election to focus on disaster recovery efforts.

“We’re not going to distract ourselves from what we need to do, it’s about looking after each other during these difficult times,” he said.

By March 24th, Albanese had admitted that federal elections would take place in May, but wrapped up a specific date.

The announcement came the day before the government’s 2025 budget, highlighting targeted tax relief.

As both major political parties prepare for the campaign season, voters can expect intensified political debates on key issues, including cost of living, economic resilience and disaster recovery efforts.

AAP contributed to the article.
