The stepfather of Hong Kong democratic activist Tony Chang Han Lam, who is in exile in the UK, was recently questioned by Hong Kong’s national security police.
On the morning of March 18, Hong Kong Police’s National Security Agency took Chong’s stepfather to the Homan Ting district. At noon on the same day, he was allowed to leave West Korea Police Headquarters.
Chong said that while the CCP and Hong Kong government have recently continued to threaten Hong Kong exiles in Australia and the UK, he believes that “every Hong Konger wanted by the blessed blessing of mind will never fear or retreat.”
Chung was the founder of StudentLocalism, a student organization in Hong Kong, which is currently being dismantled. After the CCP implemented national security laws in Hong Kong in 2020, Chang was later arrested and sentenced to three years and seven months in 2021 for inciting withdrawal and money laundering. At the age of 20, Jung was the youngest person to be convicted under national security law.
Jung was released from prison in June 2023, traveled to Japan the same year, and then fled to the UK to seek political asylum. After leaving Hong Kong, he said he had to frequently meet with the national security police after being released from prison and was forced to provide information about other democratic activists.
In December 2024, Hong Kong police placed him on the wanted list with a million dollars ($130,000) on suspicion of inciting his departure and “conspired with foreign forces.”
Since the implementation of the National Security Act in Hong Kong in 2020, the Hong Kong government has issued wish warrants to at least 19 Hong Kong residents currently living abroad.
Over the past few months, the National Security Police have frequently detained colleagues who wish to do so in order to investigate Yong Kong Gar.
Hkpori Chairman Robert Chung Ting-yu was detained twice alongside two other staff members for the investigation.
In February this year, the aunt and uncle of former district councillor Carmen Lau Kamen were taken to the police station for an investigation.
